Being atheist does not mean I talk about atheism all the time
Every so often a comment pops up on content I publish on Republican Atheists’ Facebook page, asking, “How does this relate to atheism?”
The published content may be discussing military news, police protocol, or events in the public education system, and there is a good chance it does not have a connection with atheism.
I’ve responded with the question, “Why do I have to talk about atheism because I am atheist?”
I’ve actually been called a liar by other atheists for including the word “atheist” in the name “Republican Atheists,” and not discussing atheism “enough” according to their standards. Atheists have said I’m not a real atheist, or that I’m secretly a Christian, because I do not emphasize atheism. Where did this boxed-in concept of an atheist evolve from?
This concept does not make much sense when comparing to religious groups. I have met Christians who say they believe Jesus Christ is Lord, yet they do not feel compelled to discuss it with others. A similar scenario can be applied to atheists who do not feel interested in sharing their atheist views with others.
Additionally, in my view, there really is little to discuss when it comes to atheism. All atheism is is lack of belief in a higher spirit. There is no complex text to interpret, like the bible, and there are no rules to follow.
In regards to social issues, I consider atheists to have it pretty good in the west, in countries like the United States, Canada and in European countries. If I do discuss social issues relating to atheists I tend to focus on extremist countries like Egypt, Turkey, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and others where atheists are being “hunted down.”
I understand everyone has different experiences and outlooks, so I welcome you to email me your experiences or links to articles you find relevant. I will take that information into consideration.
On a final note, again, being atheist does not mean I have to talk about atheism all the time, and neither do you.
