Official statement regarding the Washington D.C. March
Republican Atheists condemns the violence that took place in Washington D.C. on January 6, 2021. We support the offenders to be penalized under US law.
Having said this, we acknowledge that the march was largely peaceful, with thousands of voters from across the United States in attendance.
We stand by efforts to improve election security in the future to reduce public mistrust of election results, such as requiring ID verification, limiting mail-in voting and regularly updating voter rolls.
On a final note, we do not turn a blind eye to the violence committed for over four years by groups affiliated with the names Antifa and Black Lives Matter, and how this ongoing violence has played a role in increasing hostility. We particularly take note of Black Lives Matter protesters blocking entrances to President Trump’s Inauguration on January 20, 2017, as well as Antifa rioters wreaking havoc on the streets of D.C. the same day. More recently, we have not forgotten rioters entering the US Treasury Complex in Washington D.C. on May 29, 2020, as well as rioters attacking many police stations, public buildings and historical sites throughout the country during that time. This reference is to not justify violence that occurred on January 6, 2021, but to remind the public that there are multiple angles to look at in regards to civil unrest.
