Secular Student Alliance manager calls Republican Atheists “a mess”
Recently Ryan Bell, national organizing manager at recognized atheist organization Secular Student Alliance, called Republican Atheists “a mess” on Twitter, despite having never communicated with Republican Atheists.
Republican Atheists recently posted on Twitter about Secular Student Alliance supporting an organization called Sunrise Movement that directly promotes Andrea Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal and targets children as young as 8 years old to push its agenda. Bell re-posted the tweet to his personal Twitter account. A Twitter user responded to the post, saying, “Wait, there’s actually an organization called ‘Republican Atheists’? Why tho? [sic].” All Bell responded was, “It’s a mess.”

For years Republican Atheists has attempted to get in contact with Secular Student Alliance, a national organization that represents atheist students on college campuses across the United States, in order to build awareness of our existence. The organization has never responded. Additionally, Bell has never spoken directly to Republican Atheists’ board members to learn more about the organization and how it is developing.
We are disappointed that a top leader in a national organization representing atheist students would speak poorly and carelessly about another atheist organization that is essentially representing a percentage of its members who are registered Republican or generally take interest in conservative politics.
It is known in the US atheist community that Secular Student Alliance has pandered to left leaning political protocol more than representing atheism. While it has promoted Women’s March, Black Lives Matter, and Sunrise Movement, it has failed to represent atheist conservatives and Republicans.
Secular Student Alliance’s current mission statement:
The Secular Student Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and the only national organization dedicated to atheist, humanist, and other non-theist students.
The Secular Student Alliance empowers secular students to proudly express their identity, build welcoming communities, promote secular values, and set a course for lifelong activism.
We recommend that the leadership of Secular Student Alliance will observe its mission statement of “empowering secular students,” (not only left-leaning secular students), and re-assess the type of biased political content it is pushing through its national leadership. Another option would be to change its name to “Liberal Secular Student Alliance,” and update its mission statement to more accurately state that the organization’s purpose is to represent left-leaning atheists and politics.
