Exclusion

American Atheists’ secular study excluded Republican Atheists

American Atheists recently published a secular study, called “Reality Check: Being Nonreligious in America,” that focuses on showcasing the life and priorities of US-based atheists. This study has received considerable attention from various media outlets pertaining to religious discussion.

While the study states at the beginning that 34,000 atheists were surveyed, Republican Atheists notes that American Atheists never contacted Republican Atheists about sharing the survey with our following. As a result, Republican Atheists’ following was not made aware of the survey, and therefore likely did not participate. This means the survey does not reflect the views of atheist Republicans.

Further, American Atheists did not even make the effort to contact atheist conservative communities. Jillian Becker, manager of the blog The Atheist Conservative, noted that she was not contacted about the survey. The Atheist Conservative is one of the more noted atheist conservative media outlets, with a Facebook following of over 10,000 users. Becker shared in a recent opinion piece her thoughts about not being contacted about the survey, and how this exclusion continues to present the US atheist community as a left-leaning “only” community to the public.

Republican Atheists does not consider American Atheists to have properly conducted this survey to reach a wide spectrum of atheist Americans. On a final note, Republican Atheists’ President, Lauren Ell, asked American Atheists’ Executive Director, Nick Fish, about how American Atheists promoted the survey. Fish did not reply.
