Atheist and humanist organizations move forward in prioritizing left-leaning political views above all else

As atheism has become more accepted in the United States, atheist and humanist organizations have gone politically rogue to maintain relevance. When I say “politically rogue,” I mean they have become political powerhouses that place importance on left-leaning political views above all else.

This has me question how many atheist Republicans, and atheist conservatives, are willing to continue supporting these organizations, if they ever did support them in the first place?

Here are a number of examples of atheist and humanist organizations going politically rogue..

Secular Social Justice

An event called “Secular Social Justice” taking place on April 7, 2018 in Washington D.C., has been sponsored by well known atheist and humanist organizations such as American Humanist Association, Foundation Beyond Belief, Secular Student Alliance, Secular Women and United Coalition of Reason. The conflict here is that “social justice” has also been associated with shouting people down with differing views, kicking people out of online groups for not following the “social justice” protocol and ultimately showcasing a lack of “human dignity” (ironic that’s one of the points Secular Social Justice claims to strive for).

I understand humanism is a complex belief system and therefore humanist organizations can be involved in events like this due to their eccentric views, but the issue I have is that humanist groups closely drag along the terms “atheist” and “secular” with them to the point that they act like “atheist” is synonymous with “humanist,” and therefore atheists are automatically associated with humanism. This can be seen when a humanist chaplain gave an invocation for the Florida House of Representatives in January 2018 and humanist outlets called it an “atheist invocation” rather than a “humanist invocation.” Take note there is a difference between atheism and humanism, and many atheists have no involvement in “humanism” whatsoever.

Additionally, organizations like Secular Student Alliance, Secular Women and Foundation Beyond Belief come off as organizations that support atheism in general due to their generic names, but when looking further into them one may acknowledge that they actually promote humanism and ultimately left-leaning political ideology.

Secular Student Alliance March for Lives

Secular Student Alliance, an organization represented across the United States at college campuses, states its mission is to “empower secular students to proudly express their identity, build welcoming communities, promote secular values, and set a course for lifelong activism.” However, the organization has time and time again shown it prioritizes left-leaning political views that extend far beyond atheism. The screenshot above is a recent post from Secular Student Alliance noting its chapter members participating in March for Lives, an event that has no clear mission on gun control, handing out large posters stating, “We want want policy and change, not thoughts and prayers.” So now I guess being in a general atheist group means challenging the second amendment.

Southern Poverty Law Center Secular Coalition of Missouri

Secular Coalition for Missouri, a branch of Secular Coalition of America, is planning to host a workshop series with Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization that is laden with conflict among the atheist community after placing well known atheist ex-Muslim activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali and ex-Muslim activist Maajid Nawaz on an “anti-Muslim extremist” list. One workshop is titled “Social Justice Teaching 101: A Teaching Tolerance Workshop.” Of course the organization can host these workshops, but would they be open to more conservative-oriented events or giving a voice to conservative atheists? At this point in time, it seems not.

Foundation Beyond Belief Black Lives Matter

For International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Foundation Beyond Belief posted a quote graphic featuring a statement from Obama explaining what “Black Lives Matter” means. This is a difficult topic to tackle considering Black Lives Matter has come to be known as a domestic terrorist group by many Americans whom have acknowledged the organization’s tactics of shutting down major freeways, shouting down speakers on college campuses and preventing students from attending certain events. I have to wonder.. Are those aggressive tactics “humanist” tactics?

The examples can go on. I also recall major atheist organizations, such as American Atheists (an official Women’s March partner) and Freedom from Religion Foundation, going out of their way to support Women’s March which features co-chair Linda Sarsour, a Muslim activist who has been dedicated to building Islam in America, has promoted pro-Palestine efforts and has expressed support for Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, one of the most notorious anti-Semites in the United States. Must being involved in atheist and humanist organizations entail pro-Islam efforts? In most cases, yes.

Needless to say, atheist and humanist organizations have shown that they prioritize left-leaning political ideology above all else which has made the American atheist community appear to be a strictly liberal voting block. Increasing numbers of atheists are leaving atheist and humanist organizations due to their political bias.

Republican Atheists will continue to draw awareness to this political agenda in the general American atheist and humanist community. Please share this article with others to spark awareness. Thank you!

I lean pretty much full on to the left with my politics, but with the parties being what they are these days, I like to at least try to understand where folks on the other side are coming from.

This article lists a lot of humanist groups getting behind causes that the author feels they should ignore/stay out of, but what are some humanist-relevant causes that these groups are ignoring because they are part of right wing politics?

*If there are none and this is more about how humanists should ignore causes that have been politicized then that’s a valid answer too, but I haven’t jumped to this conclusion because, frankly, I’m really bad at putting words in your mouth.

If atheist and humanist organizations prioritize left-leaning political ideology, it’s because atheists and humanists themselves prioritize left-leaning political ideology. It’s true the atheist community is not a *strictly* liberal voting block–see Dave Rubin, Sam Harris, Penn Jillette, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Bob Price, the Amazing Atheist, etc–but its members do vote overwhelmingly liberal.
