Public statement: Military Religious Freedom Foundation’s reaction to veteran memorial
Official public statement published by Republican Atheists on April 6, 2021.
Recently the president of Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) received press coverage for calling a newly installed veteran memorial in Monument, Colorado, a “wretched, unconstitutional dumpster fire.” [1] [2]
Republican Atheists has no problem with the legality of the memorial being discussed, but criticizes MRFF’s president’s comment calling the memorial “wretched” and a “dumpster fire.” We acknowledge the memorial was ultimately erected as a kind gesture, and that his comment will be viewed as not only disrespectful to veterans, but also to those who wish to give respect to veterans.
We are publishing a statement about this incident because we are more than certain his comment will be assumed to directly represent atheists.
After communicating with the president of MRFF, we note that he is not atheist, but identifies as Jewish.
Additionally, MRFF does not identify as an atheist organization. The president noted that the organization has “over 550 volunteer and paid staff…about 84% are Christians.”
Republican Atheists supports respect for veterans, and encourages legality of memorials to be thoroughly investigated before installation.
