Republican Atheists’ statement regarding the Bladensburg World War I Memorial
The Bladensburg World War I Memorial located in Bladensburg, Maryland became one of the most heated separation of church and state discussions in 2018 when the Supreme Court announced it will hear arguments on the case.
The cross-shaped monument that is nearly 100 years old came under fire when American Humanist Association filed a complaint in February 2014 demanding that the memorial be removed because it is located on public land. In December 2016 the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of American Humanist Association. American Legion, an organization that contributed to the completion of the monument in 1925, filed a petition afterwards that eventually led to the Supreme Court taking interest in the case. More details about the case can be found here.
On June 20, 2019, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that the monument does not infringe on the Constitution and will remain standing.
Here is a statement from Lauren Ell, President of Republican Atheists, on the decision made.
“The Supreme Court’s decision for the Bladensburg World War I Memorial to remain standing is a victory for preserving American history. The monument is nearly 100 years old and serves not only as a memorial for brave soldiers who fell in battle, but also as a reminder of past values of American society.”
On a final note, Republican Atheists has received astounding response of agreement from its supporters that they approve of the memorial to remain standing.
